What should I say when I just pop into some shops and try to get a part-time job?

Depending on the place you are applying, it isn't always necessary to be presentable because you are probably going to end up speaking to an employee, not a supervisor or manager. Approach the counter or person and ask "I was wondering if you were hiring and/or looking for help." It's usually good to look around you to see if there are any signs inside or outside the building suggesting that they are hiring
