MMORPG's charge fees usually because people are willing to pay, alot of the money is used to pay the staff working for the company and the server costs, which is understandable.

There are alot of good RPG games online that are free, but World of Warcraft is the better one out of the lot, and Blizzard know that, that is why they charge these fees

I suggest you only pay for a MMORPG if you can afford it, it's easy to get addicted though so watch out.

it's all about supply and demand, Blizzard gained our respect with Warcrafts 1 - 3, Starcraft and Diablo 1 and 2. when they showed screens of World of Warcraft people went rabid and wanted it badly they'd kill for it. So Blizzard used this demand for World of Warcraft to charge a monthly fee. And they're still going to until everyone moves on to the "next big game"

As for the first question, the G in MMORPG stands for "game" after all, so they SHOULD have games.

The reason why MMORPGs have fees is that the programmers and customer support make a living running and updating the game. The fees are their pay.

You can go to http://www.mmorpg.com/ and find free mmorpgs in their games list. Lots of different types. The ones without any $$ in the money column are free. Others only require purchase of the game and or the monthly fee. Maybe you'll find one you like.
