It's such a haunting song, but I have never understood its meaning

Wichita Lineman. This was written by Jimmy Webb, who also wrote Campbell's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Galveston." He was driving along the Kansas-Oklahoma border when he saw a lonesome telephone lineman working atop a telephone pole. This gave him the idea for the song.

It's 'Wichita Line*MAN*' - it's about a guy who works on phone lines and develops an infatuation with a woman whose voice he can hear by tapping into the wires. (Note - The guy isn't necessarily a perv eavesdropping on people; at the time this was a common means of testing transmission quality.) Some of the instrumentation in the original recording is supposed to mimic line noise and static.

witchita line is a railway way line sohe sing about the rails..I used to work on a radio tower up behind his house in the mountains and had the occasional beer with him after a day working high up.
