So, I've gathered that the whole premise behind American Idol is to take a bunch of contestants who aren't talented enough to land a record deal themselves, judge them on how well they sing someone else's material, and then give them a recording contract. How could this possibly be a good idea? I've yet to hear any original artist come out of this show, because they're just emulating other popular artists. The vast majority of the time, they don't even compare to the original artist's talent, so what's the point? I personally think that it's doing terrible things to the music industry because kids now want to win American Idol singing some pre-existing pop star's songs instead of finding their own sound and working their way into a record deal.

I agree. I would say music is entertainment and music is art. American Idol completely removes the artistic part from the music leaving only entertainment, which if I was profiting from it, would be what I'd want too. American Idol, like many other profitable ventures, is the sale of a dream. Can that be good for music? Possibly on the entertainment side, but certainly not for the artistic side.

There were alot of people on American Idol who had their own sound. Alot had their own bands and we trained vocally. So for you to say there is NO originality in them I think would be wrong... The reason why American Idol is so popular is because it gives people who other wise probably wouldn't, get discovered in the music industry. And they are just doing what most record companies are doing anyway even if they did have their own sound or style as you say they don't, once thy got discovered the record companies will just market them the way they want anyway.

One word...Daughtry.

Chris Daughtry went on idol and put a spin on songs and made them his own. It was a blessing that he was voted off and did not win. It allowed him to go out and make his own music without AI owning his soul for however many years they do.

The point of AI is exposure. Producers will see raw talent and find people worth working with. There are many talented people who would never get this type of exposure if it weren't for AI.

The unfortunate part is the viewers have to muck through the no-talents and average-talents to find those few worthwhile.

it inspires more people to work at music, so it's got an effect on fine arts programs in high school now, which means more to colleges later

as far as the industry? I'm sure that a huge part of popularity is name recognition, so I don't see that it hurts the industry too much -- it is about performance after all, not just musical talent

My sentiments exactly.
What's worse is that millions of viewers watch it religiously, altering their idea of what talent is. If you can't sing like Mariah or Christina, then you aren't talented? Since when!
