I've heard about this, but it's mostly a scam because of the people that are against the company Procter & Gamble (the company that makes Iams). Check out the link in my source list for a little more realistic approach.
The person who worked in the Iams building for a time to blackmail the company actually took many pictures of dogs who were not even under Iams' care, and then claimed that these were the dogs tested. The entire Iams cruelty evidence is based on one person's misled observations. Don't believe everything you hear.

Yet more ridiculous propaganda promoted by PETA and other such extreme groups. Have you ever thought about what we would test animal food on, if we didnt give it to animals? Do you want to feed your pet an untested food? Have you ever thought about the thousands of animals saved because of these specialty diets (i.e. in recent years the mortality rate of cats Hepatic Lipidosis has decreased from 90% to 10% based on studies Iams did which is just one study of many, let alone the fact that the average lifespan of pets has increased by more than 50% in the years since it became the norm to feed pets well balanced, researched diets over the table scraps they use to get 50 years ago) Did you know that almost all the studies funded by Iams are actually performed by the leading veterinary teaching colleges in the US (Purdue, Colorado State, Michigan State) Do you think that the worlds leading veterinarians would just stand by and let awful things happen to animals? Have you ever even researched or read the actual protocols and policies used in these studies, the strict guidelines that are enforced and the outcomes of the pets from each study? Did you know that the types of tests done (bloodwork, urine test, muscle biopsies etc) are also done in HUMAN medical research, and found completely acceptable.
My point is you cannot make a balanced, knowledgeable opinion on this subject unless you have listened to all sides, and reviewed the evidence each has. You cannot just assume that the crap you read on the internet is true. I know there are several examples of animal testing that is cruel and unneeded, but Iams is not one of those.

I have heard both views on this, but all I can say is that I don't know if it's true!! Peta has forged some videos before but if Iams really DID test on animals, they would deny it, wouldn't they?
However, I don't buy it because of its contents. It used to be a premium dog food but Procter and Gamble changed the formula after it bought Iams. It's main ingredient is corn, yuck!

Yes, I've heard about it. How sad. :(
In one experiment, 24 young dogs had their right kidneys removed and the left partly damaged to investigate how protein affects dogs with kidney failure. Eight dogs were killed to analyze the kidney tissue. Dogs which became sick were not treated because it would have undermined the test results.
In another test, the stomachs of 28 cats were exposed so scientists could analyze the effects of feeding them fibre. The animals were operated on for at least two hours and then killed.
It's absolutely ironic, how a company claims to look out for the well being of our friends ... and at the same time, torture and kill them. I used to buy Iams for my Pit Bull ... I don't anymore. :(
