Teachers who insist that they are color-blind are fooling themselves. Anyone who endeavors to teach, brings with them the sum of their own biases, beliefs systems, and values to the classroom. Most teachers are white middle class products of the suburbs and have little experience with children of color. Culturally sensitive curriculums that focus on solid pedagogy and not the celebration of everyone's holiday is important. It helps these teachers to become aware of their own biases, and assist in not allowing them to adversely affect their classroom behaviors that perpetuate the black/latino - white/asian achievement gap.
