With all due respect to libertarians out there, libertarianism can never be a serious contender in the current two-party dominated system.
1) There's no money in it, and there's no serious financial backing. The Libertarian candidate is never a contender because too many people are already invested in the other two parties. In a campaign against either a Democrat or Republican, 99.9% of the time, the Libertarian loses. If you can't get a candidate elected, you have no hope of remaining a viable party.
2) Libertarian candidates I've seen in action don't come off very "professional". In a debate about 6 years ago, the Libertarian's canned answer to every question was "Privatize it!" Public transportation? Privatize it. Homeless shelters? Privatize them. Public parks? Quote: "My solution would be to privatize public parks. We could charge admission to the park. People would guard the park and that would create jobs. People could sit in an admission booth by the entrance and that would create jobs." Has anyone ever heard of something called "reduction to the point of absurdity"? These were crappy ideas, not to be taken seriously, for numerous reasons. You just can't privatize everything.
In another more recent debate, the Libertarian candidate this time was literally a crusty old man, unkempt, unshaved, he had food in his beard, and he was wearing a dark brown suit, kind of like the one Joe Pesci wore in "My Cousin Vinny" which was stained, dirty, and wrinkled like he slept in it. How about some pride, sir? A debate is a "job interview" of a sort.
Maybe there's the connection: the candidates don't look appealing, their ideas don't sound appealing, so they can't raise money, to run successful campaigns, to win office.
I sincerely hope my answer was helpful.

There are some flaws in it, I don't follow it blindly, but I do believe that the government should be less involved in people's lives. I think the isolationism is wrong, wrong, wrongidy, wrong, and I am also inclined to be Greenish.
But largely my political beliefs can be best described as Libertarian.

I agree with it on a personal level... yet I think it has fundamental economic flaws... I don't like the government in my, or anyone's personal business... but I think it has a place in the business world...
