Can you recomend a way to perform a little league baseball draft?

Would you retain a certain amount of returning players or make it an open draft?

I have done both. Most 11 year olds like to stay with the same team - if you put them back in the draft and they don't get picked by their old team they kind of feel rejected. If they played on a team last year it's kind of their right of passage to be the "veteran" to the younger kids or new kids joining. It might seem unfair at times if you have one team that has a lot of talent and the kids also look at the team that won last year and the one that didn't and refer to them as the good team or the bad team. A major league type draft of last years worst record picks first works to even some of that out.

When they turn 13 they all go back into the draft and end up on different teams but 2 years together form a bond that builds sportsmanship and respect in those later playing years on opposite teams.

Here in my city you are allowed 3 players that you can claim,the coaches rate all the players A-B-C then you get a draw at each level until your roster is full.All new players are put in C level.There is also leagues you can carry a whole team,year after year,tournaments to get into and a lot of fun to be had by all.

Section V of the Little League Regulations states that your league must be in compliance with the Little League Draft Selection System "as detailed in the Operating Manual." Any deviation from that recommended by Little League must be described in writing when the league applies for its charter, and it must be approved by Little League.
