Disc bulging is very often asymmetric. As forces acting on a disc try to push it dorsally (directly backward), its movement is stopped by the ligaments there. . . . good thing too, or it would run right into the spinal cord.

Bulging occurs when the force going dorsally is added to a rotation force, which allows the disc to bulge to one side of the ligament. This is where the nerve roots lie, and in the low back this leads to sciatica.
