I think so. 99 percent of kids will spend most of the evening on extra curricular activites or hobbies like computer, video games, or watching t.v before they hit the sack. I think it would do some good to add an extra hour to the school day for the last course/period just for doing homework. That way, they are more likely to get it done and they will have a tutor or teacher on hand to help them out. The last thing I wanted to do when I was in school was go home and bury my head into some books! I was often home from school wanting some help with homework but either one of my parents was too tired, busy, or still working! I also agree that teachers are going overboard with the weekend homework.

OMG. Why can't we report abuse for stupidity??? Sorry...but 'thereal....' are you kidding? Kids DO participate in activities outside of school. But what is the most important aspect of the school day for your children?? lunch? recess? or learning? Homework reinforces the lessons of the day. It also provides students with the important lesson of 'self-discipline'. They will either spend the time and energy to do it...or ????? What exactly do you want to teach our children? Life is fun, full of sports, extracurricular activities???? That is the ideals that have gotten our society to where we are now. The youth of today 'expect' and think they are 'entitled' to the things they grew up with. But, they are ill-informed that it takes hard work, dedication and time to become a person that can provide those things. America may be a major power today.....but we are digging ourselves deeper and deeper to a goal of weakness. We are soon to be over-run by the people of China, India, and others because they actually value education.

I am a teacher and witness this everyday. "My son doesn't have time to do homework because he has basketball practice"...."my daughter has volleyball practice and piano lessons....she doesn't have time to do homework"....blah blah blah. I was in more clubs, activities, sports, etc....than most kids participate in. BUT, I had to make sure my schoolwork was done first. If I couldn't get my schoolwork done....I didn't do the activity. Americans are growing more lazy by the second! It is sad. I am only 30 and grew up in a society that pushed being educated. I don't think I will ever understand how our society has reached this point. Americans = I WANT. Would you prefer that I teach our children to have fun and let the Chinese and Indian peoples worry about making the stuff we want??? That will surely help our falling economy and unemployment rates...right???

I am 30 yrs old and have been teaching for 7 years. I have homework everynight. Should I adopt a no homework policy??? I will just n ot grade anything I can't get done at work...and I will not write any lesson plans for my classes (unless I can get it done at work!)...and I won't coach volleyball or track, since it doesn't occur during the school day hours...I will leave work at the end of the day with whatever is done as done.

OH! And by the way....your parents were to bust to help.....teachers/tutors should work longer hours to teach YOUR kids??? Stop punishing hard-working teachers/tutors. Put the blame where is lies...with your parents! And stop being ignorant! Follow the ideals of a teacher (and a parent) to TEACH our kids and make them better. It's easy to 'pass the buck' when it comes to our youth. Go ahead...blame someone else! We are forming our own future in our kids!

HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES???

No, but there should be a limit on how much they can assign. My son brings home way too much homework all of the time. There should be a no homework policy for weekends so that kids can spend time with family and friends.

Well...if you don't do homework, how else can you reinforce the knowledge that you've learnt? Sure, schools can set aside time for students to do homework before they are released, but as they grow older, do we still have to "force" them to do homework? Does that mean students don't have to "study" at home?

How can we inculcate values like self-discipline into students if they need an authoritarian figure to "motivate" them to do homework? So if the teacher's sick from school and the class affected is supposed to "finish their homework" before they're released, should they just leave and "blame" the teacher for not coming, that there's no one to "help" them? How about checking out books or the Internet using school facilities themselves?

Anyway, we why call it "homework" if it isn't done at home?;p

Definitely not. Homework prepares you for the real world--just wait until you graduate and get a career. You'll be carting home work on nights and weekends, giving up your vacation, working while you're home sick in bed....might as well get into practice early!

Of course not, what worked for people in the 50s and 60s will work for us today. Don't try to fix what isn't broken. Kids today need homework, it keeps them from becoming idle, thus turning to deviant activities such as gangs, drugs and the like.
