Go to any of the opportunity shops. If the fibre of any of the things you want looks okay, then buy it and then soak everything in napisan to disinfect them, then wash and iron and they will come up beautiful. One of my friends did this for her baby's whole wardrobe and it looked like she had spent a fortune. Another idea is to ask all your friends or relatives if they have any old sheets or blankets that they don't want, then cut them down to size, put a satin binding all around the edges of the blankets, and get some of those iron on transfers for the top end of the sheets and fancywork them by hand.
