My 5 month old son only wants to be with me at night. Last time he went to spend the night at my husband's parents house he cried and wouldn't stop and we ended up having to go get him. He will be spending the night there again tomorrow night. My husband and I will be going out with friends and I don't want to be interupted by his parents calling us telling us to come get him. We are going to Mexico at the end of the month for a week, and I want him to get used to being with someone else at night besides me. What are some good tips and tricks to calm a crying baby, aside from the obvious (feeding, changing, rocking, singing, etc.)? My mother-in-law found that running water seems to work. Any other ideas so I don't have to come and get him tomorrow night? Thanks a bunch!

I know dozens of ways to calm a 5 month old baby, but the best one is to be held by their mama. Sorry to judge, but I wouldn't leave a 5 m/o for a week to run off to Mexico-- I'd be bringing my baby with me and making sure I had a good baby carrier to bring along on the trip. Maybe even invite the in-laws (or another person) so you and hubby can take a few side-trips to the beach... alone. But that's me.

Also, your MIL seems to be quite a departure from most MILs! Usually when a new baby comes along, MIL has *all* of the answers, whether you want them or not! LOL I got a kick out of your MIL not knowing how to soothe a baby....

I would tell her to expect to walk the floor with her grandson. A lot.

How long have you known these people? I know you say they are your husbands parents but how long? Does it cross your mind that something could be going on there behind closed doors. I dont know these people and dont want to judge. That is what would be in my head. ( Is why doesnt my baby want to be here?) You may think you know someone so well untill........ All im saying is always listen to your children and trust them. Even though he is only 5 months he is telling you something. Whether it be he only wants you or something is wrong. DOES HE CRY IF YOU LEAVE HIM ANYWHERE ELSE? OR HAVE YOU?
Is this your 1st baby? Why are leaving him for a week? I am going to Florida when my baby is 1 and he is going and I am so excited to take him and play with him. I would never want to take any of my kids to Mexico though. The government is so weird and the mexicans are just untrusting. Other than the going to a diffrent country you shouldnt leave your baby.

get them the happiest baby on the block book
baby's usually hear 90 decial in the womb or like around 80
the vacum 90 dec in the hall way might do the trick or by the crib ,
blender, or even the radio on static seriously as high as it will go and then have them move it away or turn it down - seriously he must even the washer/drier/diswasheror blowdrier might be enough nose
try swaddling with a tshirt you wore already and hasn't been wahed the diter the better even rubb him down with it too, shhhhing and also have them hold the baby it isn't spoil until hes a daddy himself lol but seriouly it will work give it two night you guys try it at home too once you find something it will be like heaven

p.s. my daughter sleeps with me half the night and the other half in here crib she is bf and she is just now starting to warm up to others when tired so i know exactly what you are going through oh congrad on you trip gl

p.s.s my md told me when we leave we have to act very happy but make it short but sweet so the baby is content - don't try to sneak out or wait for him to turn his head if he cries hug an kiss

It's good that you are getting out some so your baby will not be one of those who can't be left alone for a minute. Have your MIL put your baby in a carrier on top of her dryer, while she stands there holding his hands, cooing, and talking to him. Often the slight vibration of the dryer will be very soothing, and once he gets in a calmer state, he can eat better and therefore, sleep better. Take the time to call and let him hear your voice on the phone even though he's little, he will recognize your voice..

If he's that young, it's only natural that he wants to be carried and held all the time, not deserted somewhere else with strangers so you can go party.
You're a parent, now, live up to the responsibility.
Get one of those baby-carriers that allow him to ride on your belly, so you can keep a good eye on him, and he can pattern himself after you. Just wear him like you would a backpack, and you'll both come to like it.

The one thing that has almost uninanimously worked for me is cuddling the baby, walking around, and sortof lightly and gently bouncing the baby up and down in your arms by moving your shoulders up and down, and and the same time make the shhhh shhh sound. The sound reminds them of the sound of being in the womb.

have them try rubbing his head. Thats how i get my little girl to sleep. Also get a teddy bear that has the sound of a heartbeat in it. Or try sending a blanket misted lightly with your perfume. So he smells the scent of you . Have them lay the baby on there chest so he can hear there heartbeat until he falls asleep.

white noise like the water or a humidifier running or soft music in the room also upping his nighttime feeding amount so that he is more full and sleepy. i know this is weird but my daughter likes it when her daddy gives her a blanket that smells like me when im not around (i used to work nights) maybe if you sleep with the blanket your sending to grandmas with her she will be calmed by the smell.

the sound of a running vacuum always calmed my kids. Also szuszing in the ear (like a szszsz humming sound) in the baby's ear, like a soft vacuum sound also calms them. a bouncy chair that vibrates. Baby einstien videos

(just thinking of all the stuff that worked for us)

I dont know your situation, but I am shocked that someone would leave their 5 month old for a week. I know everyone needs a break, but a week is a bit extreem to me. What are you going to do if your mother inlaw cant get him to sleep? Make her stay up for a week so you can party? Have fun
