I like to sing along with the songs I listen to on my computer, and when I listen to myself I think I sound pretty good, so I tried recording it and I was very upset to find out that I sound horrible. I dont understand though because my dad can sing really good, and our voices sound exactly the same. No one can tell the difference over the phone. So why cant i sing good but he can when we have the same voice? It sounds like i have absolutely no range at all and im in monotone or something when i listen to the recording. But if i listen to myself while im singing it seems like I have good range...

Well, not just over the phone, we sound just alike in person too. I was just using that as an example. Do you have to sing pretty loud to sing good? because i dont sing that loud.

Somewhere I read that the way we hear ourselves sound is different than the way it actually sounds.

It also might also be that you're being too hard on yourself.

Or maybe it's a bad recorder?

Maybe you need to go to a voice teacher, and then they can help you.

I think it just means that you can sing but your voice is not true tone, like it's a little sharp and a little flatter than the real note itself. Check it with a tuner or an instrument, and get a more experienced friend in the voice department to train you, or your dad. Voices can be similar, but the quality is different, something which you cannot hear just by talking because there is no melody to it.

I think you are a bit like me, and I'm a follower of the music- I have to match the pitch of the real voice instead of singing it myself. This can be fixed with some vocal training and singing a cappella. A first step would be to find your vocal range with an instrument.

we all get shocked the first time we hear ourselves from a recording, simply because we are used to hearing our voices from the insides of our heads, and not as the rest of the world hears us. If you enjoy singing, and it feels easy to you, please continue. You might very well want to indulge yourself by finding a singing teacher and taking lessons. That way you will gradually integrate the "outside" with the "inside" sound.
A bit of self help: continue to record and keep track of what it is you are doing. While you listen to the playback, make notes: "that phrase sounded dull, how did I feel when I sang it?" or "That note was good, how can I repeat that feeling?" or " that sounds all choked up- was that where I tried to swallow?"
Best wishes and keep on singing

same with me. i always sing along to songs and out loud. and i used to think i sound pretty good. but when i heard it at a concert we played, it sounded really bad. i thought i hit all the notes, but unfortunately i didn't. I insisted we got a new singer, so we did. Now i sing back-up, and im cool with it. I might take lessons, i think that will help. the point is, if it doesnt sound good, it doesnt sound good. that doesnt mean stop singing. you sing cause you love to, i still sing all the fckin time, i dont care if i sound bad. you sing cause you love it. and im sorry to hear that you dont think you are good.

This means that you cannot sing, but would be great to audition for American Idol. Just because your dad and you have similar voices on the phone means nothing. I sound nothing like my dad in person, but over the phone we sound the same and they always think that I am him.

you're able to have good breath help no rely what. or you wont make it via making a track 3 strains. Breath help has not something to do with making a track vibrato. not all human beings can sing with vibrato and a few human beings cant stop making a track with vibrato.

Sounds to me like you're genetically gifted, but don't know how to use the gift yet. If your voices are as similar as you say they are, that is. Take some voice lessons and get back to us!

Lets face it, honey, some of us wish we could sing but we can't. That's okay, all those other people who can really need us...as an audience.
