I want to hear from comic fans.

Is DC Comics' recasting of heroes (i.e. Firestorm as black, Atom as Asian) a step in the right direction? Or are they giving minorities hand-me-down characters instead of investing time in effort in new ones?

A step in the right direction? Not really sure about that. Anything DC has realized that is doesn't have much ethnic diversity within its universe. To me, it is taking a bunch of second-tier characters and changing their race just to see what kind of response the character will get. Will young Blacks read Firestorm now that he is Black? Will young Asian Americans read Atom now that he is Asian? Will it hurt the sell of comics to do this even though sales of these comics were either none existent or lagging?
Its really nice to see characters like Mr. Terrific who has changed race take more of a lead role in the DC universe but if the only thing you are going is change their race and not do anything else then its really not worth the change is it?

Unlike Marvel, DC has a long trend of replacing characters. That is, unlike Marvel where characters are born with their powers or are biological in nature, many DC characters have their powers granted to them. This leads to many characters, including top tier ones, being replaced over time (4 Flashes, 4 or so Green Laterns). The decision to take an exisiting white character and make them a minority is really not even a majoirty of the cases of new characters being replaced. The DCU is not really that diverse of a place to begin with, in part because so many of the characters were created so long ago. Adding diveristy to the lineup does not neccesarily improve the comic, only if its couple with quality writing as well. If people feel that a character was chosen to be a minoirty just because, then readers will feel that it is disingenous and cheap and not like the comic. Therefore, its a step in the right direction only in the sense that if they use it as a vechicle to address new issues. As for handing minorities second tier characters rather than creating new ones, DC right now is trying to resuse old characters and clear out back catalogs. For that reasons, I think they are avoiding creating many new characters at all, minority or otherwise.
To say that its just related to political correctness ignores the the attempt by DC writers to attempt to do something different with a character pool that has been stagant for quite some time. I guess we will see after a year or so whether or not the writing is up to the task and then we can judge if it was a good move or not.

first of all to all you marvel idiots... DC has made more money, has better storylines, and better/smarter heroes... maybe thats why DC comics are more valuable and are actually considered classics, cmon all you guys have is Xmen,Spiderman,Hulk, and Deadpool everything else sux... compared to original characters that DC make

and to answer your question mitchell... DC has not been handing out characters to minorities... the original Lex luther was black, firestorm was always black and his comic dates back to the 70s/80s... the green lantern was made black in the mid 90s... cyborg and many other characters were minorites, its just that DC hasn't made an effort to sell these comics til now... nothing ever reached the popularity of Batman, superman, flash, and green lantern... other characters were always features... DC decided to tone down there popular characters and make sells on comics that struggled to get off the shelves

I think it is more the latter than the former. There have been some characters changes that I objected to, but others ie Nich Fury, where it actually improved the character. But I wouldn't do it with true comic icons. But in the end comics like every other creative medium reflect the times.

in terms of uncooked power, it may could desire to be the two The Composite Superman or The Spectre. The Composite Superman became into Joe Meach, a custodian on the Superman museum. He hated and resented Superman and Batman for being heroes on a similar time as he became right into a no one. He by hazard obtained the powers of the completed Legion of great Heroes (60’s version). If his powers hadn’t worn off, he could have killed Superman, Batman and Robin by surprise. you are able to examine the classic appearances of The Composite Superman on the ‘Superman in the path of the an prolonged time’ web site. this is worthwhile to to look up the Spectre on Toonopedia and Wikipedia. he's in fact God’s appointed agent of supernatural retribution against people who do evil. he's extra effective than all the different heroes in the DC universe. 4 APR 07, 1919 hrs, GMT.

They should really just try and make new ones and not try to change characters that, even as small as they might be, are already established in the DC universe.

it really doesn't matter cause DC SUCKS. MARVEL is way better.

All DC really has is Superman and Batman and honestly, they are both pretty lame. A guy who wears glasses as a disguise and an angry guy with a bunch of gadgets and no true super-powers.

It is good to see a hero that looks like you, is anything wrong with that. I think it's great.
