Neon is one of the so-called noble gases on the periodic table of elements. Look up Ne on the table and all the other gases in its column are the same - inert. Because it's inert, it doesn't react easily with other substances so it has very little environmental impact. Economically, it is used for lighting and commercial signage (e.g. Las Vegas) and combined with Helium to create a class of HeNe lasers used for scientific and medical purposes.

Neon is inert, is found in the atmosphere, and is used for signs, indicating lamps, and for some gas lasers -- and not much else. Because it is inert, it has no environmental effects.
