Okay, I consider myself fairly intelligent but of generation where any computer knowledge I have is self taught.

I CAN NOT figure out why, when I am typing in ANY application, including this one, that sometimes when I go back to add a word in the middle of a line of text, it just types OVER it, not between it. I will have done nothing different that I am aware of. In typing an email for example, I'll just have to start a new one since I have no clue what I have inadvertently done to make this happen or how to undo it. I am sure it is something simple- can someone please clue me in? Thanks

There are typically two modes when typing,
insertion - what you expected
overwrite - what you experienced

Hit the Insert key to switch between them. In many editors the cursor is an underline in insert mode, and a solid block when in overwrite mode.

No question is embarrassing. We are born with a blank slate.

I think you simply hit the insert key. It is an easy thing to do because it is situated near the backspace key.

The insert key is a toggle, which means, press for on, press for off.

When it is on, any text typed will be added to the left of the cursor. When it is off, any text typed will be typed over and thus erase existing text.

LOL..that happens to me a lot. Look at the upper right hand corner of your keyboard and you will see a button labeled 'Insert'. Then continue typing as normal. This will stop the craziness.

I tip mine the opposite direction up each and every now and back and hit it stressful some circumstances on the backside to shake out any bits. we've a rule of no ingesting or ingesting on the keyboard so it basically gets dirt debris between the keys. woman, elderly seventy 3 (confident - genuinely)

I can explain.

For demostration, please go to Microsoft Word.

When you try typing it would push a words a way.

Push the Insert button on your keyboard, you either turn on or off the overwrite option. Generally, if it it on then you would be typing over everything in it path.

Press the insert key.
Its towards the upper right side of your keyboard and it will say "Ins"

It can happen again randomly, however just push INS again and you should be fine.

Hit INSERT and then type. I bet you learn on a word processor first, huh? Nobody here even knows what that is, ha!

depending on the layout of your keyboard, you may accidentally be hitting the INSERT key. this key toggles the insert\over-write feature of most programs.

ok... simple question... simple answer...

You are accidentally toggling "insert mode" off/on by hitting the "Insert" key on your keyboard by accident...

If you are in the wrong mode for what you need, just hit it again to flip the mode the opposite way!
