The Appalachians in the east are smaller because they have eroded since their formation. They were once the size of the Rockies in the west. The Rockies are a younger mountain chain, and are larger.

If you look at the mountains the Appalachian mountains in the east are older. They have been eroded more, are smaller and more rounded by wear of the elements. The Rockies in the west are newer.
