I have an Hp DV5000 and was wondering how to make it louder without nessicearly turning it up all the way. What does a laptop sound card do too?

Well, if you don't want to turn up the volume you need to get an external speaker and connect it to the soundcard output. The integrated soundchip on most laptops are not very good, so don't expect too much out of it even with an external speaker.To get better sound you need to get a PCMCIA add-on card for your laptop. Sound card on laptops enabled a computer to manipulate and output sound.

To make your laptop sound louder than already possible you would need to connect speakers. A sound card is either internal allowing a computer the ability to accept audio input and produce audio output or external as an expansion card with connections for speakers.
