I'm considering moving to the state in a few years...possibly. I wanted to know some of the high & low points of this city. I'm a single mother of one, wanting to explore and see more.

Well, since I'm answering first I'll give you this warning: People are going to Blast California because it's so expensive--usually out of state people make that comment. Makes no sense to comment unless you live here.

Lows:
1) Traffic gets pretty bad during commuting times
2) Real estate is expensive. 2 bedroom condos average $400K and single family homes average $650K inland, and $900K in coastal communities.
That's really all I can think that bothers me.

The Hi's:
1) Lots of high paying jobs
2) The weather is perfect. Today it was in the low 70's & no clouds in the sky.
3) 70 miles of spectacular beaches.
4) The city is beautiful. The geography of this town makes it unique. Canyons, valleys, sea cliffs at the coast. It's awesome.
5) The people are so chill. I truly believe people who live near the ocean are happier.

But on a serious note, the move here is very difficult. It is expensive, and many nay sayers will make that comment. However, this is the most beautiful city in the country. It really is America's finest city. There are lots of jobs, an awesome town to raise your family, and just so, so much to do. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I'd say the worst low point is house pricing. I've recently moved into a 3 bed, 2 bath house about 3 miles from the beach in a nice neighborhood, and it cost 732k.

Low Points: Horrible commute if you work Downtown, House/Condo Pricing, and gas prices, its currently 2.86 per gallon last time I filled the tank.

High Points: Great weather, its 68 degrees outside, and it's 10 pm. It's always around 60-75 no matter what, unless theres a storm, which haven't been happening.
Great people, I'd definitely recommend starting a family here, it has a comfortable atmosphere, and the community is great. I'm not worried if I let my kids go play down the street, its very safe, and as parents we watch out for each other's kids. There are also lots of high-paying jobs. I know a few high school students who flip signs on main streets and earn 16 bucks an hour. If I could stand for so long, I'd go do that myself. Great Mexican food as well, I live less than 10 miles from the border, and if you think that taco bell is genuine Mexican food, then you are wrong.

There's too many high points to name, but they definitely out weigh the low points.

San Diego is one of the largest Cities in the United States and

has 3 Million People in the County Limits and 1.5 Million in the

City Limits. The City is a Hub For Defense, Medical,

Technological and Enviromental Research although the housing

prices are High, the Real Estate Bubble has burst and depending

on what job you have most houses are in reach. Many

Companies Started in San Diego and still Exsist in the Region

including, Jack-in-the-Box, Price Club (Costco), Qualcomm,

Petco, Jenny Craig, DC Shoes and Clothing and Sony, Sanyo,

Kyrocera and Motorola all have Corporate Campuses in San

Diego. The City has a varied and unique cultural history with the

City being discovered in 1542 and finally established in 1769

thanks to Spanish Conquistadors, in addition many other parties

have a special place in San Diego History which include Julian,

an African-American Mining Town, Portugeuse in Point Loma,

Mexicans in Barrio Logan although that might seem segregated,

the City is a diverse Place, if you're looking for safety the City of

San Diego only had 5 Murders in all of 2005 compare that to New

Orleans which has less then 500,000 people which had 154

Murders in the same amount of time (Pre-Katrina), as for

Education San Diego Schools are amoung the best if you read

Newsweek 1,000 Best High School 8 San Diego High Schools

are among the top 150, and for Higher Education, San Diego has

the best Community College System in America (Mesa,

Miramar, San Diego, Grossmont, Southwestern, Cuyamaca, Mt.

Palomar, Mira Costa) and also 4 Year Universities are in

Abundance (SDSU, UCSD, CSUSM, USD, Alliant International,

National, Point Loma Nazerene and etc.) also the weather in San

Diego is constant and varied, San Diego is one of the only place

where you can play in the snow and the beach 30mins from

each other thanks to the Laguna Mountains in the Eastern Part of

the County. The Downfall of San diego probably has to be

Traffic, although there is a System called SANDAG and

CalTrans that is trying to control the problem (Take that LA) and

possibly the affordability of housing but, that will be under control

within 3 years

To live in California, in general, is an expensive state to live. San Diego is awesome! It's a place of diversity and endless things to do. You and your child can spend tons of quality time together. Transportation is everywhere.

I suggest you go there for a weekend and see for yourself. I plan on buying a vacation home there because the weather is wonderful all year. There are different parts of San Diego just as with any city. You have the urban areas concentrated around downtown. That's where they live and work. Lofts, condos, etc. Suburban areas are a little outside the hustle and bustle, but very accessible from a freeway.

one of the lows is the cost of housing, but if you go inland a little the prices go down. The traffic can be a pain at times.

But the highs are too many to name. As a single parent who has lived in San Diego I can say that my kids loved it. The zoo and the animal park were always high on the list for weekend activities. Then there is always the beaches or if you go inland there is Juilian, a small town. If you enjoy good food there are great restaurants every where.

Well, some low points I can give are: traffic can be really bad at times, things get really expensive, and if you do move, you'd want to move fast because housing isn't cheap, but there is alway rent for suburban home and apartment outside the city.
Highs: There's a lot to do, the suburban homes are really nice [since I'm a teen living in them outside the city], and the weather's really nice.
