the influx of immigrants changed the face of the us. we are going through the same thing now with the mexican immigration question. the immigrants "took away" jobs and lowered wages. they would work for less and longer hours. they were also more likely to band together and voice labor concerns and issues of inequality. the irish, polish, itialian, etc..all came to the us and tried to fit in as best they could, but adapted to make our sytem work of r them.
they came to the us in search of the american dream and were more likey to demand it.

"The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair, is set in Chicago during that time period. A great read -- the central character is an Eastern European immigrant who becomes involved with Socialists.
