I actually did this for my boyfriend for Valentine's day, and he loved it. I say, from experience, that it is a great idea, and he'll never be able to guess what it is in advance!

Always ask a person if they want a pet before buying one for them. Sometimes we guess wrong and a pet even a fish is a serious committment for as long as it lives. One thing you could do is get him a gift certificate to the fish store for the set up. Just be sure to let him know that if this isn't something her wants right now he can get a refund and you and he can pick out a more perfect gift. That way too of he does want a Betta he can pick out the one he likes best preferably with your help and advice since you know more about them.

I would make sure 100% thats he wants a fish at all. For some unknown reason my office gave everyone a pet Betta for x-mas. Since then I have adpoted 5 fish as my own and found new homes for 5 other abandoned pets. I have done well so far, only 1 dead fish at the office and it was due to body fungus. Thats out of the 40 or so fish here.
If he does want one, take him shopping for a tank, fish and food. Picking out your new betta is the best part. Just be sure to pick one thats lively in the lil crummy container its in. Lethargic ones tend to be close to death at pet stores.

I got a Siamese Fighting Fish only a couple of weeks ago... a friend bought me it as a House Warming Present!
I've never wanted a fish before, but now I love him, and I've spent about $100-$150 on getting a decent set up for him.
If he likes fish, than a Betta is definitely the way to go!

Dont ever buy a pet for someone as a gift unless you are certain that they want it. Otherwise it will not get the attention and carethat it needs and will most likely die.
Plus , whats the fun in a solitary betta? I think the whole idea that they need to be segregated from other fish is kind of cruel. Much nicer to have a tank full of fish that get along .

Ummm...I don't think so. Unless he's hinted that he wants one.
Pets rarely make good gifts. They come with a burden of responsibility.
Years ago, the King of Siam, would saddle his political enemies with such "gifts." If someone offended him, the king would make an elaborate show of bestowing that person with a gift--a sacred national treasure, really. It was a white elephant.
The recipient of the white elephant had to honor, protect and care for it, and if found negligent, could be punished severely. The cost of all this was often ruinous.
A betta fish would probably be a white elephant in a bowl of water, for your boyfriend.

That would be a cool bday gift. I watched my friends dog the other day while he and his gf were away. I also had to feed the beta they have, and they are a cool pet, they don't take up alot of room, not much maintenence, and while I was playing with the dog I also talked to the fish. Just make sure your BF can name the fish.
BTW, I am turning 26 too. Make sure he gets other gifts too, ones that will make him smile all day long. :-)

Just like the same mentality of every responsible parents getting a pet for their kids- get ready to keep that pet if he suddenly change his mind about keeping that fish.
Giving a 'life' as a gift is always very sensitive..It's not like a wallet or MP4, he can throw it aside when he's not in the mood.
They must be care for daily till their last breath.
The plus point is that you can be sure to have an addition subject to link with him from then on..
Well done!

Yes, and get one of those fish bowels that go on the wall instead of a tank, they will make his place look so cool.
We have two globes on our walls and it's not that hard to clean and the fish have survived for the last 3 years which is incredible.

Buying pets for someone else, i.e., birthday, christmas, etc., is not something to be entered into lightly. If you are ABSOLUTELY sure that he will take care of it, and that involves the possibility that you two might break up someday and you wouldn't be there to take care of it for him, or in the alternative, would take it back if he didn't want it, then, sure you could get him one. I appreciate that you are getting a nice big tank and doing it right.

A fish will make a great gift. But don't get him the fish right away. You have to make sure to cycle the tank first. So get him a nice tank, and teach him how to cycle it so you don't hurt a fish.
