When a team is down and is fouled on a shot, why do the basketball analysts always say that, "they can put points on the board without time going off the clock." I've never understood this point, if they aren't fouled and make the shot instead, doesn't the time on the clock still stay the same? If there is 3:00 left and they make the shot, it's still 2 points with 3:00 left. If they miss and get fouled, they still have an opportunity to score with those same 3:00 left? Anyone else agree?

No, it's not the same.

Here are the two scenarios:
(1) Player gets fouled in the act of shooting.
As soon as the whistle is blown, the clock stops. Let's say there's 3:00 left in the game. The player shoots two foul shots. The clock remains at 3:00. The opposing team gets to inbound the ball; the clock DOES NOT START until the ball is inbounded. As a result, the team who shot the foul shots have gained two points and still have 3:00 left to steal, foul, etc.

(2) Player is not fouled, makes the bucket.
The player gets two points but the clock remains active. The clock runs continously from the time the ball is released from the player's hand (with 3:00 left in the game) until it passes through the hoop, into the opposing player's hands, and is inbounded. Thus, by the time the team who is losing is down is in a position to press, steal, or foul, there may be as little as 2:30 left in the game.

Also, making a foul shot and stopping the clock eases the transition from offense to a defensive press and allows the team to set up more quickly and coherently than the quick transition from offense to defense if they had just shot and scored.

given your argument that time stops at the same 3:00 mark when they make a shot, but the big question here is...DO THEY MAKE THE SHOT, in the same 3:00 span if the offensive team attempts a shot and doesn't make it but gets the rebound for another attempt, they leave less time on the clock.

Now if they failed at the attempt and the defensive team gets the rebound, well...the defensive team will obviously waste more time on the clock to leave the offensive team less time to work with.

That is not the case though when the offensive team gets fouled in the process of attempting a shot, they get to trim the lead with the time not running. Hence the expression "they can put points on the board without time going off the clock."

well that one jennigrl had an extremely perfect answer...but to elaborate on the topic one step further...yes..that clock keep running like 3:00 2:59 2:58 etc... but when it reaches the 2minute mark, the clock stops after everymade field goal..so if a basket is made at 1.57...the clock stays at 1.57 until someone touches the inbound pass..
...but if a field goal was made at the 2.57 mark...the clock continues to run...that why many teams will take to the the rim to get a foul/ and easy bucket...the defensive team will let the go the bucket to not get them to the foul line...so they force them to shoot jumpshoots

on the fouling situation... once that 2 minute mark hits... each team only has one foul to give...even if there was no fould committed the entire quarter...that means if there is a loose ball foul at the 1.58 mark...and the next trip down there is some sort of foul, the person who has the ball shoots the shot...

getting more complexed...hack a shaq rule.. teams fould shaq as time runs down and shaq doesn't have the ball... the person with the ball at that time gets to shoot the free throws... so if someone were to shoot a 3pter and make it...and there was a defender who knocked down an offensive player who was setting the screen, the one who shot the ball would get an opportunity for a 4pt play... (4pts in one possession)... seen it happen on the suns, detroit., lakers, and denver... these teams run lots of screens to open up 3pt shooters...it happens..

they have the chance to put points on the board without time going off the clock because when they shoot free throws they have all the time in the world and if they shot it without getting fouled the time would still keep running even after the ball goes through the net, and the clock stops when someone is fouled.

I see what your saying, and by the way they say it I can see why...
They are meaning the team that is down and is fouled(like you said) gets fouled, the other team MADE A MISTAKE, because they did a double no-no. They stopped the clock(which is the worst thing they could do) and if the team makes their free throws, give up two points.

If they used better wording, this would be more understood.

I agree, but what if they aren't fouled and aren't in the act of shooting, as in what if they are still passing the ball around trying to find a shot. Then the time is running out. That's what they are trying to say.

Well...time is still running when they shoot a regular shot, and it stops when they shoot a foul shot.
