Unknown? Hardly.

He was a character in the recent film "The Prestige".

He was a character in the graphic novel "The Five Fists of Science" by Matt Fraction.

He has been the subject of several documentaries such as "The Master of Lightning", "The Missing Secrets of Nikola Tesla" and "Nikola Tesla-The Genius Who Lit the World."

The rock band Tesla was named after him.

UNESCO proclaimed 2006 as the "Year of Nikola Tesla" celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth.

In 1997, Life Magazine named him one of the "100 Greatest Men in History".

he's only unknown in comparasion to Edison. Probably because Edison invented a lot of stuff, and was involved in the War of Currents with the guy who invented AC current (westington i think), who Tesla supported. Since Edison was more prominent at that time, he bashed the AC supporters.

The vast majority of people are unknow, whether or not they have made a contribution to knowledge, and engineers more so than others.

However, you can hardly claim that a man whose name is used for the units of magnetic induction is unknown today - it is just nonsense. He is better known than many who contributed far, far more.
