I went to In-N-Out burger the last time I was in California, March 2005, and I had my first (and only) Animalized burger, which for those not in the know includes a burger patty fried in mustard. What would be the best way to replicate this, because the craving is driving me nuts and there is no In-N-Out for 2500 miles! Please help!

Just squirt some French's mustard on your patty, grill it on both sides. Viola...you've got a similar burger to In-N-Out. Of course, the Animal burger has grilled onions so you'll need some of those too!

An animal burger is not just mustard, FYI.

The closest I've come close to a double meat animal style is by cooking one up by yourself. Take a skillet and coat it with a light film of cooking oil (cooking spray would work well too) and bring it up to high heat. Take a hamburger patty and coat one side with mustard. Place the patty in the skillet mustard side down, coat the other side in mustard and cook the burger like you would any other burger. In a separate pan, caramelize some diced onions until slightly brown and translucent. Once the burger is finished, put it in a well-toasted bun, top with lettuce, tomato, the caramelized onions, some 1000 island dressing.

Voila! Ghetto Animal-style burgers.

I have an In N Out right up the street and never knew they were an animalized burger. Knew something was different about them, but not the mustard coating. Mmmmmm...mustard.

It doesn't make ANY sense to me either. They were my favorite too, and now I regret dieting in the past year because when I went to get some recently after not having them, I was told they were discontinued. I craved those marvelous fries. :( It really perplexes me too because whenever I walked into my local BK, that's what most of the people had. Sure, there were Whoppers and chicken sandwiches, but a lot more chicken fries. Even little kids who usually get kids meals solely for the toys, had chicken fries (which don't come with toys!) They should bring them back if they get so many complaints. They were and ALWAYS will be the best menu item from BK.

Ok I live in the Midwest after living in CA for all of my life. I miss In and Out SO much!!! There is no good fast food out here. I am sorry to say I dont think you will be able to replicate their burgers you are just going to have to take a vacation to get one. That is one of the places I always go to when I visit my parents. I wish that I had one now....
