Why arent black lights called purple lights?

I believe they're called black lights because the UV wavelengths emitted from them are invisible to the human eye. Black, I'm assuming meaning unseen (as in darkness), therefore invisible.

because they are used at night or in the dark.

I've always kind of wondered the same thing... I just stopped caring because it doesn't really matter though.
Could be that the inventor of the blacklight was color-blind.
