I believe they're called black lights because the UV wavelengths emitted from them are invisible to the human eye. Black, I'm assuming meaning unseen (as in darkness), therefore invisible.

I've always kind of wondered the same thing... I just stopped caring because it doesn't really matter though.
Could be that the inventor of the blacklight was color-blind.
