According to Yahoo maps it is about 8.6 miles. I'll paste the info. The 11 minute time is a bit optimistic. I'd allow 30 minutes normally. Add 15-20 during rush time.

San Antonio Airport To Riverwalk

But 281 is so congested right now, I would exit from the airport to the 410 loop and take a left. The first exit is Broadway. Take a right and drive toward downtown. Not near as congested, lots of sights, and much nicer drive into the downtown area. Besides you might just want to stop at the Central Market HEB for a bite to eat or a few groceries and even at the Brackenridge park before heading all the way downtown. Have fun. Broadway will take you all the way to Houston St.

About 10 miles. Exiting the airport due south, you run into US 281 which goes right downtown..
