There is no good way to ask for that kind of money.

If you want to minimize the fallout, you might try asking them to loan you the money (and insist on a written contract with scheduled payments), or asking them to co-sign a loan. Both of those options would make you appear more mature than flat-out asking them to bail you out.

You made the mess. Learn to deal with it. There won't always be someone there to bail you out.

(Incidentally, I speak from personal experience. We all screw up.)

Do the grown-up thing and earn your way out of the hole. There are TONs of part time jobs that can do that.

I think the bigger problem is not the $20k you owe but rather the thinking that lead you to spend $20k you did not have. Fix that so you don’t end up asking this question again.

In my family , they would fall out laughing, then suggest you get a 2nd job stat.
You spent $$$ you should not have then you want to further humiliate yourself by getting someone else to clean up your mess ? Are you nuts ?
You will have zero respect if you pull that lame move.
Get a second job now or sell something of yours to cover the debt.

Unless you owe money to a loan shark who is going to bust your kneecaps or something, don't ask the family for money to fix your mistake.

I made a mistake, and I need help fixing it... Just be honest. NO dinner to butter them up or anything like that, that just aggravates some people.
