My mother in law tried to commit suicide. Luckily, she came to her senses and called her therapist. This was her first suicide attempt. She is in therapy because she has MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder). Her life was saved after she took two handfuls of medication. THANK GOD. My actual question. My husband went to her apartment to get her clothes since she is obviously in the hospital now. On the table, he found three envelopes. One with my husbands name on it, one with her siblings name on it, and one with her therapist name on it. Obviously, her left suicide notes. Husband refuses to read it. I agree with his choice and we will give it directly to her therapist. Now my question. HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD READ WHAT WAS IN THE ENVELOPE? AND WHY?

I would read it, if for no other reason than to help myself relate to where her head and heart were at the time of her attempt. I can fully understand why your husband doesn't want to read it though...he's afraid he may read some very heartbreaking revelations about his relationship with her. It's best to give the letters to the therapist. They are trained to "read between the lines' and understand the true motivations behind peoples' actions.

My best wishes go out to you, your husband and mother-in-law. I hope you can all get safely past this.

Yes, I would. It might be some information in there to help figure out why she wanted to commit suicide. I think it would be better to know than not to know. You could always give it to the therapist after you read it or show it to her.
I hope your mother will be alright.

I would have to assume it was a left behind suicide note given the circumstances, and going on that assumption I would not read it, but as it was adresed to me I would not let anyone else have it either. I would burn it, and discuss it with the would be suicide victim, if they wished to. I would have no idea what would be in the envelope, but as it could be personal info pertaining to me I wouldn't want anyone else being into my buisness.

i will read it because i want to know what was she thinking of at that time (before commiting suicide) and what she wants me to know or do later (if she had commited suicide). maybe by reading the letter, i might understand her situation and reasons for her actions. by doing so, probably i could help her. i hope she is doing alright now.

Yeah, I'd read it.. It's adressed to me, so obviously someone wants me to read it.. And people tend to spill their heart out when they think they're about to die, so you can be sure that everything in the note is 100% true.
