I work in a remote office and my direct supervisor works in another office. We only see eachother in person about 2-3 times a year. All other communication is via email, phone, IM. I am planning to quit --Given our circumstance, can I resign over the phone? I don't anticipate seeing her anytime soon, so I don't know how else to do this.

You probably can quit over the phone, but it is best to provide something in writing. Type up a letter, scan it and send it by email (with a read receipt if possible) so she can get it as soon as possible. Ensure that your resignation date is at least 2 weeks away. Then mail the original to her, keeping a copy for your records.

You have to have a conversation with your boss. Schedule a conference call with you Boss and discuss you desire to resign. Before you have the call prepare a resignation letter and have it ready to send via email when your con call gets to the resignation topic.

It is normal for people to quit and move on. It is becoming more normal that remote workers are faced with these issues.

I did this 2 years ago with a boss I had for 6 years. I was very honest and forthright and we had a great conversation.

You could call him if that is the only way - but I would also send a formal resignation letter (via fedex) so there is documentation and you will get your good standing rating - and your 2 weeks' pay.

Legally, I believe you can. Or do not show up, and when you receive a phone call tell them that you quit.
