Washington despised the idea of "parties". He would never have "signed on" to one. He once said (of parties), "It is better to be alone than in bad company.” Speaking only of the things he believed in and fought for, he would be a libertarian, but not a Libertarian.

He, as did Jefferson, believed in classical liberal conservativism espoused by John Locke. Many Republicans (particularly Reaganites) are more Lockean than Burkean.

Liberalism in Washington's time was predicated on breaking away from the rule of monarchs. That liberalism is called contemporary conservatism today.

Today's libertarians are a bit too anarchistic for Washington, et al.

He believed in very limited gov't. So he'd be a Libertarian.

He would have beeen so embarrassed of both parties he would have gotten on the first boat back to Britain and renounced his past.
