I want someone who will help me get my book published and sold and I know I would be better off with an agent but I don't know how to find one.

It's a misconception that you would be better off with an agent. While it's true that agents are useful if you are an author, that's if you are an already published author, they can make sure that you are treated poorly by your publishers.

Right now your best bet is to just submit your manuscript directly to a publishing company.

Agents are incredibly costly and you should avoid them.

Go to the Southern California Writer's Conference (www.scwc.com). They have three conferences a year, and you can pitch your book to agents. It really is a lot better than the typical query letter route. It's how I found my agent.

writersdigestbookclub.com has several books that list agents and if they accept new clients, how to contact and what to send. After reading some of my books from writer's digest about the ins and outs of agents, "I" want one.

Go to your library and look at a copy of Writer's Market (or buy your own).

A good place to start a search for agents: http://www.agentquery.com/

A good place to check up on agents that you find:

Go to the library and ask for The Writer's Digest. They'll probably have an older issue to use, but that will get you started on how to write to and for them, etc. There's lots of good tips there.
