It is without a doubt Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

In fact, the Sherlock Holmes books are the second most sold books in the world, second only to the Bible. Nothing even comes close.

Actually... Agatha Christie is not only the best selling mystery author of all time... she's the #3 selling "Author" period - #1 being the Bible (however you credit that authorship!) and #2 being the works of Shakespeare. Her books (which are all in print) have sold over a billion copies.

Nancy Drew series sales might be in that league, but "Carolyn Keene" is a pseudonym. There were two primary Nancy Drew authors in the early years, and many more since then (not all women, either.)
