My math teacher assigns way too much homework, I can hardly ever finish it in less than 3 hours. Few people in my class can handle it all either. Sometimes the teacher even says she gives a lot of homework without realizing it. How can I gracefully tell her that the workload is too extreme?

If all the students come to an agreement, have a mutiny!

Just kidding. Actually, tell your parents, and maybe they can get together and talk to the teacher. It's kind of hard to do because you feel as if the teacher might punish you if you go against her wishes. Believe me, we've all been there. Maybe you kids can just all together say "We're getting too much homework!"

A good teacher will always know how to pace her class. What point is there to rush through so much homework if no one really understands it? How do students learn from that? I think if you work together with your fellow classmates, you wil share the burden of telling her, and no one student will be penalized if you all work together and do that.

And worst comes to worst, have your parents arrange a conference with the principal and the teacher.

It's really up to the teacher how much homework to assign, get used to spending lots of time on homework it only gets worse the further you progress in school. However, that being said, it is obvious it's probably an excess to the point where you aren't learning what you should be. I wouldn't complain to her, she may get offended and your plan could backfire, leading her to assign even more homework. If you think there is a genuine concern, I would talk to a student in another section of the same course and see if your homeworkload is disproportionate. If you find out that your teacher is assigning a LOT more(not just a small difference) then I would speak to the person in charge of curriculum at your school, usually the vice principal. Speak with him or her and express your concern, then if he or she finds that you have a genuine complaint it will be investigated and the appropriate action taken. Good luck.

Assuming you are high school age or younger, I would suggest you have a parent call her and speak to her about your concerns and your time. I would also check out from the library or purchase the following books for her to read:

The End of Homework by John Buell & Etta Kravolec
Closing the Book on Homework by John Buell

How about "Mrs. Smith? It takes me over three hours to finish your homework assignments. Is there any way we can cut them back a bit?"

Teachers can be reasonable, too. If she has problems figuring out when she's giving too much, ask her if she minds if you point it out when she assigns it.

Raise your hand and ask her how long she thinks her assigned homework will take. Then raise an eyebrow and say you think it will take a lot longer. Do this kind of thing for a few days in a row, and she will get the message.

you really can't. she will come up with something like ...you have time at lunch...or ...start it as soon as you get home...
No teacher believes they give TOO MUCH homework. It is always " It is just enough and if you think it's too much you should budget your time better". There is really nothing you can do. I used to have to stay up till 4am doing my stupid homework.
It is probably something you are just going to have to deal with.

i HAD to check this question out to see if your someone from my algebra class. my teacher too he gave us 90 problems the other day. You can probably ask your teacher when its due and she/he might look at it and maybe can give u a later date other than the next day.

you could try writing a letter to her(in a nice way..), or something on paper and then have all the kids that agree with you, sign it.
then you can give it to her.

...thats kinda like a petition isnt it?...idunno
