Cows are sacred to Hindus but not worshiped as a deity. The cow was venerated as the mother goddess in old Mediterranean cultures. The cow became important in India in the period of 1500 – 900 BC. It was a symbol of wealth.
Cows form the core of religious sacrifices, for without ghee or butter, which is produced from cow's milk, no sacrifice can be performed.
It was said cows represent sacrifice. Without them there can be no sacrifice. Cows are guileless in behavior and from them flow the sacrifices of milk, curds, dung, urine, and ghee. Therefore they are sacred. By providing humans with milk for their whole life they can be considered surrogate mothers of humanity. They are still considered to be the most sacred gift in rural areas.
When Lord Rama married Sita, he was given a dowry of 1000 cows and bullocks. Cow dung is used as fuel instead of firewood and as a disinfectant. I also know people who have beautiful homes in which the kitchen floor is made from cow dung. Whatever they do with it, it does not smell and lasts for a long time. Their urine is used for medical purposes.
Cows are not eaten because they are considered a gift to mankind. Eating beef or veal is sacrilegious. Selling beef is banned. When McDonald’s lied about using beef fat in their foods to Indian, there was a riot and the store in Calcutta was badly damaged.
When I was in India last summer I saw cows everywhere. Almost all looked well cared for. Often I saw people passing a cow, touch it gently and then make a religious motion with their hands as if they had been blessed. I saw cows lying in the middle of traffic in Bangalore. Motorbikes and cars just detoured around them. I asked who milked them and was told that these cows provided milk to the many beggars of the city.
They were regal creatures and of all varieties. Some were absolutely gorgeous animals. I saw them with their horns draped with flowers, gilded with gold, pulling carts, in herds, they are everywhere. I saw more in the city than the country. Instead of farms where cattle destroy the land by being left for long periods on the same acreage, the Indian farmers stake their cattle in different places each day. This way there is less damage to the land. I even saw them staked on grassy islands in the middle of traffic.
As for dogs, it was a different story. I am a dog person and it was distressing to see so many starving gaunt dogs. It looked as if all the dogs in India had bred for so long that they were all mangy yellowish brown. They lurk wherever people are hoping for food but, since India is largely vegetarian, there are few scraps for them. I was told that, in Cochin, the night belonged to the dogs. I saw them curled up in corners on the streets everywhere.
They were unclean and not at all like the dogs we have in the west. They had been so badly treated, and untrained, that they were wild and yet beaten in spirit. They are not part of a family as our pets are, more like wild creatures trapped within cities. I felt sorry for them but not so much as I did for the beggar children. Only in Bangalore, a modern city with many Westerners, did I see dogs on a leash. A Labrador, an Irish setter, and a collie type beast. Their owners were Westerners.
My partner, a native Indian, once saw a photo of me with a tiny fluffy puppy sitting on my shoulder playing with my hair. He was seriously concerned that it had bitten me because many there see all dogs as wild beasts. They really do not understand dogs as family members.
Also, there is a huge Muslim population in India. Muslims only keep animals for protection and herding. They are not kept as pets or allowed inside the home.
I ran across this same attitude among many Muslims and Greeks from the Old country. Any country where people and animals compete for life due to shortages, people usually do not understand the true nature of dogs. Cows are definitely the creature accorded the most honour in India.

Indian people love all animals. Some Indian people eat rats though but they are part of the untouchables, just like people who handle snakes. The traditional Brahma caste system followers consider the untouchables as unclean people. Indian people use the cow for many things except for eating. When studying a course called "Religions of the World", I discovered how the Indian people use butter and milk for different offerings and occasions. The dung of the cow is used as flooring in homes of the poor. They shine it up so it looks like it has been waxed. Dung is also very important as fuel for cooking and heating in India. I am not aware of any particular feelings for cats or dogs but elephants are worshiped and there is a temple for rats too. The people bring milk as an offering for the rats to drink.

In Hinduism, the cow is considered sacred and its protection is a recurrent theme in which she is symbolic of abundance, of the sanctity of all life and of the earth that gives much while asking nothing in return. Most Hindus respect the cow as a matriarchal figure for her gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet. Hindus do not worship the cow, yet it holds an honoured place in society, and most Hindus do not eat beef.
They do care for dogs and cats too. Its not preached that Indians care for dogs/cat but they work on helping these creatures.
All animals have special attention in India

The cows are considered sacred and loved for the following reasons:
1. Their milk is Regarded as healthy and nutritious.
2. The ox has been used as a agriculture help for centuries. Also for pulling bullock carts as mode of transport in rural India.
3. Cow dung cake is used as fuel and also in villages as a temporary flooring called as " Chowka" in common lingo.
4. Cow Urine is said to have medical importance and qualities to cure some diseases.
5. Cows are supposed to be non-violent and resemble honesty and humbleness.
Bring a dog or cat that can do it all, and we are an open culture... we will start respecting and loving them too.
Rock on

Some not all Indian people do revere (religiously venerate) cows. This does not mean the cow is well taken care of. It means they believe the cow or bull has a divine spirit and should do what it wants when it wants but it does not mean keeping it in what we would think of as a nice green pasture, safe stall, etc. Ppl of this Hundu religion generally think all animals have spirits. They believe that when someone dies they come back as some other form of life. What form of life depends on what they did during this life.

Because cows have a special meaning in our country. They give us more than we give them. She is responsible for all the milk, curd, paneer, butter etc without which an Indian home is incomplete. Even her urine is used in many medicines and has healing powers. Cow dung is used as means to burn stoves in our homes as well as many people put a layer as paint on the wall as it makes all the mosquitoes and other insects to run away. It is basically a disinfectant.
Of course Indians feel a lot for dogs and cats but they are like our children wheras a cow is considered like a mother to us. I have 5 dogs and 3 cows and feel equal love for them all .But yes the dogs are like my children and I have to look after their wellbeing..I have to look after the cow too like feed her, take her to the vet, clean her but still I get that motherly feeling from her.
In return all my pets give me love like no one else does ! But the cows give me more than just love.
They all have a special place in my heart!
