I bought a bin from http://www.gaiam.com - the lid snaps shut, but has an opening on top with a charcoal filter, so it doesn't stink and because air circulates it doesn't get quite so rotten as food gets in a closed bin.

It's important that you empty it at least once a week, if not more often, or you'll get bad smells and fruit flies.

If you live somewhere with harsh winters such that it's hard to get to the outside compost pile, you might consider vermiculture (a worm bin) for composting kitchen scraps inside. Search on "worm bin" and you'll find plenty of resources.

I use a small bucket with a top, I lay a piece of paper towel,or newspaper in the bottom. I keep it in a cupboard under my sink. I empty it frequently in myEarth Machine composter. I use the paper in the bottom, so it empties out easier and easier to clean up too.Empty it often or you'll get fruit flies.

Martha Stewart Living had an article in this month's magazine about just that.

Special Gardening issue page 122. It's with worms, though, but it's for under the sink.

The most cost effective answer is a coffee can with a tight fitting lid, but if you want something more decorative that you can leave out, try some at www.gardeners.com.
