That statement, and many others of similar content are endemic to any chivalric warrior class dating back through the ages.
The attitude is probably most notable in the Samarai of Japan and the Knights errant of Europe/Britain.
It might be noted that while it was a motto and a way of life for some warriors, others treated as a status symbol, and as with some people today, sought only personal gain from being a part of such a group.

yes... that's one of the codes that samurai lived by...
it still exist in japan. many teens would commit suicide if they failed to pass a college entrance exam,for example. but i think there are helplines that help them deal with this today
