Being taught a subject is better than just asking questions about it. If for no other reason than you will get the information in a logical manner. If you just ask random questions you will roam all over and around the subject, but you won't learn the subject as well.

Another reason why teaching is better is that for some fields you need advanced education to understand them or to even know what questions to ask. Unless you understand math I can't teach you algebra, unless you understand algebra I can't teach you physics and unless you understand calculus I can't teach you advanced physics. If you wanted to understand Einstein's Theory of General Relativity you can ask all the questions you want, but to truly understand it you need very advanced calculus and an excellent understanding of physics. Without that background I can't teach you.

To massacre an old saying: to answer a man's question is to feed his interest for one day, to teach him is to feed him for a lifetime.

Asking and Answering questions is a good way to teach, but it is only a start. I can quote Wikipedia until I am blue in the fingers, or you could take a class on the subject and get more knowledge yourself.

However, the best way to learn is to ask the question and then seek out all the information on it until you understand it. That is the advantage of the Internet you can do it all in the comfort of your chair at home. For a more complex subject though nothing beats taking a class in it.

Asking questions is VERY important. But you need to know how to ask good questions. And... you don't know what you don't know so being taught is VERY important. Being taught, when the content of what is taught comes from the student and in an environment that encourages questions is the answer.

You have spun yourself into a circle. If you ask and learn, are you not being taught?

It's like, "Which came first?"

Sometimes when someone is teaching you something, or trying to explain something, it encourages questions.

In the same turn, when someone has a question about something or questions how to do something, they end up being taught.

Works both ways.

This is a trick question, right? Asking questions is teaching yourself...I've always asked questions...maybe that's why I like to answer them more often now.

I think a mix of both is more beneficial. You learn things you never heard of, then you ask your questions. Much more enriching.
