Americans certainly recognize the "mullet" as a hairstyle. It is generally regarded to be a rather poor choice of style, but in the 1970's it had a particularly large following, when popular rock artists such as David Bowie sported the look.

The term "mullet" is of unknown origins though it has been speculated that fishermen in the 19th century wore their hair in that manner, and thus the term mullet, which is a kind of fish, was given to the look.

Regardless of the origin, the hairstyle is known across the globe, though other cultures have different words for it. Even Canadians frequently call it "hockey-hair" right?

It's all business up front, party in the back!
This should help...
I'm a teacher and in my classroom, I have a picture of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr standing back to back with the Stanley Cup from the Pens 1991 victory. I had to explain to my students a million times at the beginning of the school year that those 2 are NOT women. I had to justify the "neatly coiffed gentlemen mullets" by saying that it was the style back then...and that they're foreign and they couldn't help it...

Plenty of Americans know what a mullet is. Jeff Tremaine (director of Jackass) got a mullet for a skit on Jackass in one of the episodes you should go watch it.

I'm American and I'm proud to say that I was a proud owner of a mullet for 10 years. I keep saying I'll grow another one but it's to damn hot where I live now. up north in Buffalo it was great. In South Florida, it's too much...may be one day...

Ever seen a NASCAR Crowd?

Mullets were invented in the south when some woman cut her brothers hair in hurry right before they had sex before their Mom got back to the Trailer.

Mullets are typically stereotypical of the poor whites in the US south. The fans in NY might be in for a shock, but down here in the south it's normal. I've even seen people it looks good on!
