i have a geo metro it only gets 40 mpg if i run 93 grade any lower and the engine pings and lacks lots of power now with the corn fuel stuff they said that a station had 10% ethanol i tried it and the car did not like it one bit the pump said safe for all gasoline compatable engines there was a e-85 pump 3 rows down so i know i didnt use that but to me ethanol has a lower octane as my car stalled and lacked so much power i had to have my tank drained and refilled with regual gas

10% ethanol is going to happen soon if not already being used. It sucks, too. It takes 2 or 3 times as much alcohol (and that's what it is) to go the same distance as 1 gallon of gasoline. Some cars will just not run good with it, almost no matter what you try to do. Damn meddling enviro-creeps!!!

10% ethanol is usually put in the lower grades of gas than 93 octane.. but no ethanol is actually higher octane.. but aparently your car may have some other issues (like carbon buildup in the engine) that's causing your issues as usually only high performance cars usually need 93...

But I think it may become mandantory in some areas but when and such is unknown... They tried ethanol 20 years ago before almost everyone went to fuel injection (that and the blending is better now) that had major issues with cars with carburators

Ethanol has a much higher octane rating than gasoline. Pure ethanol is about 120 octane. You shouldn't be pinging with regular gas in that engine - sounds like your ignition timing is advanced too far. Time for a tune-up, I think.

Your car wouldn't have enough compression to use higher octane fuels - a little like trying to run it on diesel.

a geo metro's engine in definately rated for 87 octane... unless the compression ratio has been up'ed you need to get your stuff checked out. as to your question most gasoline has ethenol along with many other additives. minnesota has made a mandatory quota for e85 pumps at gas stations, that and car companies will have quota for producing e85 cars

105 words with no punctuation. That must be a record. Don't ever use E85. Your car isn't designed for it. Ethanol is not now nor will it be mandatory in the near future.

I tried ethanol and I gotta say, that stuff tastes terrible.

Either you're making this up or your junker desperately needs an overhaul!
