A group of white, mostly middle-class well-off kids who find imperfections in there life and create a ridiculous, depressing melodrama around each one. They often take anti-depressants, even though the majority don't need them. They need to wake up and deal with life like everyone else instead of wallowing in their imaginary quagmire of torment.
OR IT CAN
hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo,

Near as the blogbaba can piece together from the conversation he has had with his children, it is a sub-culture of teens who dress and act like depressed goth freaks. They aren't as Satanic a the Goth sub-culture, not as creepy, but they are obviously disturbed in a mental kind of way. I think one of my five daughters qualifies as "emo".

Back when we were teens, you had three sub-cultures, the Jocks, the Burn Outs and the Brains. If you go back a few years more you had Nerds vs the Popular crowd. Emo is sort of like a modern cross between a burn out and a nerd, but with a distinctive style of dress that just blares out they are nuts. You can actually wear a type of clothing that is considered "emo, they identify with what we would consider Cyndi Lauper's style of weirdness. They are like functionally insane, and proud of it.

It's actually interesting to see how today's teens interact. It would make a pretty good topic for someones masters thesis. We need somebody like Jane Goodall or Diane Fossey to just observe them and try and figure out if they are really intelligent or just imitating what they see in their environment.

From reading the answers it seems to me, this would be a gothic punk person...LOL. In my time you were either, jock, preppy, metal, punk, geek, stoner, or surfer,. Sometime one intermingled, surfers and stoners. Goths came in just a little before I graduated high school almost 20 years ago. It's all the same thing, just a different name. Occasionaly there were Mods (a type of punk that wore suits and liked vespas) These names kids gives themselves are essentially the same thing we grew up with when we went to high school.

I'm 27, guess I am from the stone age also. I am glad you asked. I have wondered the same thing for some time now, just never put out enough effort to find out. Just figured it was some new teen thing.

HAHA!! I promise you it's nothing you need to know....it's young teenagers trying to make a statement by being an outcast, when in reality they are joining in on other teenagers and all becoming one. It's a style of dressing and acting...it makes them look depressed. Really lame!
