An interesting way to do that is to see if you can find his email address and send him an email that he's bound to respond to. You can look in the headers of the email message and it will sometimes contain his home/work IP Address.

Also, online games can and usually do log the IP Address of the users connecting to it. They do that so that they can block offenders or abusers of the service. They also collect it in case someone decides to hack the system, then they will have evidence to use in court.

So, yes, it's possible to find this out. It's not necessarily easy to get because you have to do some social engineering to get it or actually make contact with the user (via email) or otherwise to get their IP Address. It's also possible to get this information from the online service posing as the user and "having trouble" with it. They might give up the IP Address that the person normally connects on if you can talk them into a situation that would warrant a need for the address.

And yes, you can do a lot if you have their IP Address. If they continually get the same IP Address (which most users always get the same IP...), you could attack their router, network, host, or whatever they have connected to that IP Address. You could DoS or DDoS them. You could get a general location on where the person lives (considering that this is error prone, though). You could send them an trojan that redirects all of their traffic through your PC or some other PC for a man-in-the-middle attack so that you can see all of their unencrypted traffic... Etc.

You could figure out the IP Address yourself by simply attaching a Trojan Horse that you send to the user via email that reports the information back to you. As long as it's something he opens and runs, it can be done. It could be in almost any form that you're capable of generating (vbs, javascript, script kiddie tool, etc).

Don't be bad...
