Because it was a staple of the southern economy. Imagine if someone tried to ban calculators... accountants would revolt. Keep in mind that blacks were seen as property, worth no more than a calculator.
Nobody really wanted a Civil War, so people just turned a blind eye. They knew that the south would revolt if slavery were outlawed... there was just no way to keep their economy going without it.

Just what other countries are you comparing the US to???
Considering the effect slavery's abolition had on the economies of the southern states if is not surprising that it took as long to abolish it as it did.
If you are some how inferring that the US took too long to abolish it you should think again. No other country shed as much blood in the fight to end slavery as the US. The mere fact that it was only abolished after a long, drawn out war demonstrates MANY Americans were dedicated against slavery to a point that almost no other country may claim.
Slavery existed in Africa after it was abolished in America.

The economics of slavery never really worked out. You can only beat out of someone just a little more than it cost to keep them alive. The big hang up in the U.S. was the refusal of the government to compensate slave owners for the cost of slaves.
In most places that ended slavery the owners were compensated for their investments and transformation away from slavery was peaceful. Here there was no compensation to the slave owners and the transistion was the bloodiest war in American history.

Slavery still exists in some places in this world. It was ended here and, at this point in our history, that is what is important. Time to get over it and move on.

I believe that you need to recheck your history. I believe that you'll find that not only does it still go on today, but very few countries had stopped the practice before we had. On top of all of that, the Civil War was not about slavery to begin with.

Sweetheart: Think about your question---SLAVERY IS NOT
OVER!! Do you really think blacks (and even browns) are
FREE?? Look at this website and see how much hatred
there still is against blacks. Do blacks have the same
advantages as whites? NO--they are still a long way from
being free.

Probably because of the wealthy landowners in the south having a lot of political clout and not wanting to lose their free labor. Money talks.
