I would LOVE to answer this question for you!

This picture is NOT from a Masonic initiation ritual. It is a picture drawn by someone making fun of the Masons. While they seem to be familiar with some of the symbolism and meaning of Freemasonry, let me assure you that we do NOT chain to the floor and tie to pillasters, our new members, and do not brand them anywhere, most especially on their naked posterior, which would be embarassing and degrading, and against what we are about.

I can understand why this picture seems very strange and cruel, and it seems as though it is some sort of sattire.

I've been a Freemason for years, and I can assure you further, that if anyone tried to brand me on my behind, I would tell them what they could do with their branding iron :)

Freemasons value individuality, independence, and respect for others. The practice of branding goes against all of those, for it deminishes individuality, devalues independence, and is a complete lack of respect for the individual in terms of both mental and physical health.

If you have any other questions about this that are more specific, please feel free to contact me.

I am Freemason. It is intended to be funny.
That picture has nothing to do with the real imitation of a Freemason. The picture was made for one of 2 reasons.

First by a Masonic lodge, some lodges used to leave pictures like that hung up in a lodge where the people waiting to be ititioned would see them just as a joke to make the nervous. But most modern lodges you are not supposed to joke like that with a new candidate. The process is supposed to be treated in a more dignified manner.

The second reason could be it was made by a group that was making fun of masons. It could be some sort of anti-mason propaganda.

I assure nothing embarrassing or uncomfortable happens during imitation. There is no hazing type stuff
