Well assuming by WWIII you mean our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are more than three, but here are probably the top ones for Iraq (oil is NOT one of them).
1) To prevent a possible/probable attack from a very adament and real enemy of the United States who had already showed a willingness to use WMDs and continued to show a desire to obtain them.
2) To create a democratic government in Iraq, which would in turn make them more likely to participate peacefully and positively in the global community.
3) To end the rule of a murderous tyrant who had killed between 500,000 and 1.5 million (depending on which estimates you listen to) people, and who had connections to and was himself a terrorist.
Whether or not we were successful in these goals is another arguement, but these are probably the main reasons. The reasons for going in to Afghanistan should be obvious.
