Why do people like you act like smokers are terrible people? Why don't you ask a question that has something to do with geology?
People use fossil fuels because they need electricity and they need transportation, and at the moment fossil fuels are the easiest and cheapest way to get both.

Alternitive fuel sources are out there: sun, wind, water, ethanol. Why we're not using them is a good question. I can't answer that.
As for the cigarette butts, yeah, us smokers could put more of them in the ashtray or in the garbage can, but you nonsmokers could get off our backs for five minutes. I see more Starbucks coffee cups, used gum, and such all over the sidewalk than cigarrette butts. Of course, with the cops cracking down on litter, which now includes if they see someone drop a butt out the window, we'll have to start keeping them in our cars.

Not all smokers use the earth as an ashtray. Just the LITTER BUGS that smoke.

If it was only used for an ash tray, we would be in a lot better shape than we are. People use it for everything from a trash dumpster to a cesspool. When I read you question, I thought of that old Indian who did the pollution commercial and had a tear running down his face.

Because ashes are heavier than air and won't float out into space?
We use fossil fuels 'cause the animal rights goofs would raise hell if they caught us stuffing live ones into our gas tanks.

Cigarettes are totally biodegradable. The big question is why stupid people think the internet is a place to spew their ignorance, which tends to spread everywhere around and last forever.
