It can, but just because you live in poverty does not mean you'll turn to crime and it's certainly not an excuse. It also has to do with morals and values that a person has to begin with. But, poverty also causes hopelessness, too, which can lead a person to become apathetic to life.

Unfortunately, yes. But it is not the only cause of crime. Nor does being poverty stricken gaurantee that you will be involved in crime.

I think poverty definitely causes crime. When you're poor and you don't have the money to do the things you need to do AND you feel you have no other way out, you resort to illegal things.

Yes poverty does cause crime.

Absolutely it does. Start with property crimes and robbery--why does anyone try to take things from another or to steal property? Because they lack wealth, they lack what they want to take from another.

Why do they want in the first place? Because they never had material wealth. So poverty coupled with our consumer society, which bombards us with subtle messages like "you need this" results in people doing things to obtain what they are convinced they "need".

Yes in most cases it does!

I lived with a lady and her two daughters, they were on the welfare. She was always trying to cheat the programs and get more money and more benefits. Her children would shoplift constantly and the mom would be happy, if they got useful stuff.

Poverty drives you to a point where you think nothing could be worse and that society owes you something. So stealing, cheating and lying become second nature. Whatever it takes to get by!
It is sad but I think it is wrong!

YES, you should check the news papers that will tell you how crime has go up, and it ain't the rich guys committing the crimes, it's the poor that is just trying to make ends meet.

No- I know lots of people (including me!) who grew up in less than fortunate circumstances, but never resorted to crime. Hard work & education are the way out, but some people are too lazy to work, so they turn to crime

Only if you consider stealing enough food to survive on "crime."

It's been my experience that hoods go to poor neighborhoods to get the people there into drugs, gambling/numbers, etc., and to do some of the organized crime's dirty work for them.
