A good quality beard trimmer with an adjustable comb attachment to control evenness and length of shearing should do you all right.
If you want to go right down to smooth and make a pattern, (i.e., remove some hair completely around the sides, etc.), you will get good results with the same trimmer, comb detached.
Avoid depilatories, as they are generally speaking, not effective on coarse hair, no matter how you prepare the skin, but then again, it may vary from one individual to another.
Trimming is a personal choice, by my observation, more common among younger guys, but some older guys too, and no, not just gays.
I find it liberating, cleaner, fresher, and aesthetically, it makes a guy more an individual; but if you prefer the natural look, I respect that as well.

The best way is to leave it alone. If you trim it, the soft tapered natural ends of the hair are gone, and the cut-off stubble is sharp and prickly.
If you are old enough to have hair there, it's about time that you accepted the fact that you are becoming a man. Boys don't have pubic hair. Men do. Do you want to be a boy or a man? It's that simple.

If you want to trim, buy a personal groomer. They only cost about $20, and they make it easy to do, plus they are safer than scissors.

If you have an electric hair trimmer I find that the easiest and best way.

my husband uses a beard/mustache trimmer.
although we get a lot of questions when we have company because my husband doesn't have a beard or mustache.
If you want to shave i don't have any advise for you exept.....GOOD LUCK lol
