Fold your cards. #1 mistake is playing too many hands.
Invest in a good book, like Super System 2, before you 'invest' a lot of money at the tables.
Play and study. The more you do both, the better your game will become. Lots of players jump in like day traders, but they ultimately burn out.
Finally, have fun. If you aren't enjoying the time you spend doing this, you're better off doing something else that brings you more satisfaction.

Texas Holde-em as many have said takes a short time to learn but a lifetime to master. Get on some of the free sites and play. The only way to improve your game is to play consistently and on a regular basis. I have been playing poker for 40 years but on ly been playing hold-em for about 2 years. I am just now getting to where I finish in the money in tourneys. Its much different from stud, hi-lo and Omaha....good luck.

If you are at a tight table, play aggressive. If you are at a loose table, play tight.
Always change your play, like if you raised big pre-flop with pocket jacks and you get them again, don't raise the same amount.
Don't continue to hold onto your hand when you can see possibilities that will beat you. Like if you have 2 pair and there is a possible straight and / or a possible flush on the table, fold if the bet is high.

You can play aggressive or tight.
I play tight myself at first, but when I get a feel for the players around me...I bet on lesser hands.
Learn how to read the board on the flop and try to determine if your hand is the best. Also try to determine what the other guys have and why they're betting. Did they get trips, are they chasing a straight, a flush, or are they bluffing...just play smart.
And if you don't think you can win by bluffing...fold.
Bet smart and play hard.
Make sure you have your poker face on.
peace

If you have pocket pairs higher than 10s, raise pre flop, but otherwise, check or call.
