I serve my community by being gainfully employed.

If someone wants to be on welfare, then yes, they should work for the State in some capacity. Picking up garbage, scrubbing graffitti off buildings, planting trees, etc.

i think it wouldnt hurt at all to have everyone serve for a short amount of time. Not necessarily in the military but required to serve in some other way like firefighter, police, ambulance driver. I think it would give people a much greater sense of community and give different skill sets that they may not have acquired otherwise.

Normally in all High Schools students are required to preform a certain amount of community service in order to graduate, but as far as the military, that is your choice, as per agreement in signing into a military contract they give you a certain amount of time you need to fulfill

That is an individual decision... but it's great to help out with any cause that you hold dear to you. As for the military... I believe in serving my country...after all we are a free society.

As much as community service is good for your neighbors and your self esteem to make it mandatory is slavery.

no. i have, but i dont think its suitable for everyone. thats why i didnt want to continue serving. i dont take orders.
