Put two convicts in a tank together they beat each other up, so we removed one and now 4 days later there are 100's of fries. How can you tell if the yolk sac is gone? Nether fish has the hump that the male is supposed to have. HELP???

Congradulations on the babies! I've raised convicts through 5 generations, so I think I can help.

The yolk sac will disappear before or soon after they come out of where the eggs were laid - only a few days after they hatch. Males in this species don't really get those huge humps on their heads. You can tell the sexes apart by the shapes of their dorsal (top) fins. The male's will be longer and pointed in the back. The female's will be shorter and rounded. She'll likely have some pink or orange color on her sides as well.

I've never taken my parents out of the tank with the fry. Cichlid parents usually take care of their babies. I spent hours watching my first pair "herd" the babies around the bottom of the tank looking for food. The dad seemed the best provider - when I fed the parents cichlid sticks, he'd chew a few up and spit them out for the babies to eat. If one of the parents neglects their duties for the fry, the other one will get upset - this is probably what happened to yours. I've never had trouble with them until the fry were almost the size of the parents - about 1 1/4 inch - but you have to give them room so they aren't overcrowded or they will become aggressive with each other.

You can leave the parent that's still in the tank with the fry. It shouldn't bother them until the babies are old enough to spawn. Then the fish will try to pair off and harrass or kill the others, so you'll need to find them homes before they get about an inch long. Depending on the size of your tank, you may need to divide them up before then, so they'll all have room to grow.
